Autumn | A short timelapse film

The short was shot partially during the Jodlow Star Party 2010 in the middle of September, where we did serious testing of DitoGear™ Slider pre-production units and also during a few recent days at surprising surroundings of Wrocław, Poland.
What I love about this slider is that it works either in horizontal and vertical mode giving the option for crane-like shots. It adds a lot to your shooting style being very compact and portable at the same time.
Needless to say it works not only as a time-lapse dolly, but also as a video slider at higher speeds. The short, however, features only timelapse shots.

As you get more and more gear it is sometimes difficult to keep focused on shooting. The slider is very easy and quick to setup and provides a really intuitive and convenient user interface. I can virtually start shooting within 3 minutes on a location. It is a huge step forward comparing to my previous DIY timelapse dolly which took ma about an hour to setup.

If you’re interested in the DitoGear™ Slider you’ll find more details at www.ditogear.com
Enjoy the film!

  1. your video looks fantastic! (slider looks good too)

  2. wow - great work!_ _!looks awesome good

  3. No no, niezle te drivecamy, material robi wrazenie, mimo, ze jest utrzymany w hdrowej stylistyce, ktorej nie lubie.

Czekam na recke sprzetu - bo jakis super tani nie jest :)

  4. Beautiful images Patryk! I love the detail!

  5. Thanks!

  6. Amazing footage, looks incredible!

  7. Do you colour correct each still individually by shooting RAW? or do you just shoot jpegs and do a general colour correction once you've got the video created?

Or was that simply just all HDR and not colour corrected? I'm really interested in how you got those images looking so good! Very well done man! Would love to hear your experience from shooting this!

  8. WOW

  9. Insanely kickass!

  10. I always shoot RAW. Everything. Be it HDR or SDR timelapse or photos.

In terms of SDR shots I do basic color decisions during the RAW files development (ACR) on single shots (I mean sequences), later the entire film is color corrected after editing in NLE.

With HDR it is a bit different. The basic temperature correction is done on a first step when merging subexposures to 32bpp HDR image. Then, the most of processing goes in the process of tone-mapping of 32bpp images to 16-bit TIFFs. After that, again, final color correction of the entire film in NLE.

  11. Megan took the words right from my fingertips. Beautiful, Patryk. The grading is my favorite part by far.

  12. Sweeet - keep up the great work !

  35. Hi Patryk,

    > As you get more and more gear it is sometimes difficult to keep focused on shooting.

Now I expect something creative from your new toys!

Regarding HDR: This technique does not convince me on many shots here. I feel that you could use SDR there, and that's sufficient. I mean that HDR does not add anything here in the details of image but makes it look weird. Unlike when you photograph sky...

Good luck in upcoming creations! Best regards from Lodz.

  36. Fantastic! I like how you made some BTS timelaps too, so we could see the setup :)

  37. David Tao says:

    Wow! Wow! Wow!

  38. Thanks for your comment.
To feed your expectations - I am starting a huge project right now, not only filmic, but rather sort of multimedia live show that will include also about 1h long non-narrative film. Will be probably released in the middle of 2011. Stay tuned!

Regarding the HDR - I can't completely agree with you. My intention was to achieve sort of artificial and glamour sweet look which requires a great light and/or aggressive processing. I agree that a lot of scenes in fact did not require HDR approach because it was possible to capture them using the available 12-stop tonal range of the camera, BUT capturing them with -2/+2 bracketing allowed me to do much more aggressive processing as during the exposure stacking process the signal amplifies and the noise is being averaged and reduced. This sort of aggressive grading/postproduction would not be possible using single exposure timelapse or reel footage.

  39. Really wicked!
    Great work...now I gotta find $1500 somewhere :(

  40. Amazing.

  41. Amazing ! We published on L'Arbre Marius !

  42. Thanks! Very poetic comment on your blog ;)

  43. You definitely have the "WOW" Factor!!!

  44. what DSLR do you use to shot??? (awesome footage!!)

  45. I really enjoyed the grading - especially in shots like 2:02. Splendid.

  46. Mainly Canon 5D MKII, Canon 7D on some shots and Canon 30D, 50D selectively.

  47. Really beautiful. Makes me want to move to Poland.

  48. thanks man! Keep on making great stuff.

  49. patrick. sick work

great color grading and non-flickery HDR timelapse work dude. awesome.

that first part with the trees and the shot over the marsh is epic. nice one.

  50. thanks so much for sharing this - very informative - all it needed was for you to make like a commentary with it and it's a perfect eLearning tool.

  51. G'dy - btw - regarding the setup of the DriveCam - do you have anything to showcase that you can setup the rails almost 90degrees - then timelapse either going up or down from there?

  52. Check the video carefully. There are a few shots that show crane-like motion when the slider was set up vertically. There are also BTS shots. We didn't have that tall tripod to put it exactly vertically, but it is not a problem for a slider.

  53. Laurent says:

    very nice...

  54. Hey Patryk,

Very inspiring work. I have a question. The colorization on the video? It looks amazing, what was used in order to get that almost glowing appeal to it?

  55. Thank you for the comment.
To make a long story short - a bit of talent mixed with pinch of software and experience :) Please check the URL in the description of the film referring to my TL workflow writeup. Also - check my comments above I detailed a few subjects.

  57. Whatever it is you need to make good films you've got it!

  59. By far one of the most amazing videos I have seen on here!!!

  60. You're a MAD MAN! I wasn't really a fan of HDR but seeing this has changed my mind. HDR in time lapse is quite amazing and surreal. Brilliant!

  82. Jonathan says:

    Incredible! Fantastic work!

  83. Beautiful shot, a lot of work but worth it.

HDR videos/photos going to share same fate as high pass filter: more people discover it uglier it gets. It is easy to use but it also very easy to loose sense and make this effect too powerful. Same thing here, gentle HDR is definitely adds to whole shot, but when you can clearly see those soft borders, it kinda looking like bad example of high pass overusage. Best special FX is one when you can't even tell that this is special FX.

    My 2c.

  84. eistan says:

    Cool!!! ))))
    Whats the song ???!!! =))

  85. brian says:

i like the film. but please stop confusing tonmapped images with real HDR. This just isn't. Looks just like a computergame to me, its nowhere near filmic. i am sure you spend a whole lot of work on this one. sorry mate. if youre talking HDR consider this .....

    http://red.cachefly.net/walk.m4v

    best
    b

  86. Brian, the film uses both techniques: an HDR exposure approach and as you noticed - the tone mapping. Each of frames of the film consists of 3 subexposures bracketed -2EV/0/+2EV merged into a 32bpp HDR color space and then tone mapped to 16 bit and finally to 8bit per pixel color depth. The sweet tonemapping effect that might seem exaggerated to you was intended.

  87. brian says:

    okay good job though :)
