It is said that watching your own films is usually watching mistakes. Not this time!

Since March, 2011 with Aga Gonczarek we have been working hard on producing, shooting and post producing our first feature-length documentary film, Muzyki (Musics). It’s been half a year now, but I am so pleased to see it finished finally! A lot of fun, lot of work and great results. Summarizing the project: 5 days of shooting, 2 music videos (separate and incorporated in the film), a few shorter music clips, and a 55-minute long creative documentary.

Muzyki (Musics) is a creative documentary about the stimulative process of making music, materialized in an artistic collaboration of the musician Michał Zygmunt and filmmakers Aga Gonczarek & Patryk Kizny. It explores the inspirations, the quest for one’s roots, the artistic meetings and the musical journey into the unknown, which all lead to the creation of a unique music album and a series of exceptional live music performances. It reveals a modern interpretation of Polish roots culture by means of music and imagery.

The main characters are three artists: a contemporary Polish musician, Michał Zygmunt, a Swiss music producer, Roli Mosimann and a Polish folk musician of older generation, Zdzisław Jamborski, who have learnt to to read the score late in his life. Each of these characters tells his own story, shares his fascination for the music and brings his own unique attitude and personal charisma to the recording studio, influencing the work on the album. Each of them has different goals and spreads different message.

Those three different perspectives build up an interesting story about the multidimensional meaning of music and leave the audience with numerous unanswered questions about the old world that passed away and contemporary human condition.

The premiere of the film is taking place at Camerimage festival held in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Nov 26th – Dec 3rd.

Plus Camerimage is the most recognized festival dedicated to the art of cinematography and its creators – cinematographers. The 19th edition of the Festival will be held from November 27th till December 3rd, 2011 in the City of Bydgoszcz, Poland.

“Musics” (“Muzyki”) is the most recent project by a Polish acoustic guitarist, Michał Zygmunt, drawing inspirations from a Polish roots music and old photographs of people collected by the artist from multiple sources.

The contemporary acoustic guitar music is supported by the photographs screening during the performances. The multimedia dimension of the project is also supported by a documentary about the project as well as music videos.

We have visited Michał while he was working with Roli Mosimann at Saraswati Studio in Wolimierz, Poland during the production of Michal’s most recent project called “Musics”. This live performance music video of the piece “Musics” has been produced with a bare minimum of equipment and together with a deliberately rough style of cinematography & edit captures the essence and atmosphere of the production in progress.

This is a short film that we shot for a film competition “Film a poem” (“Nakręć wiersz”) that was organized by a polish contemporary literature publishing house, Biuro Literackie.

The goal of the competition was to encourage filmmakers to shoot a film illustrating the poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz, a well known Polish poet who has also been an unofficial Noble Prize candidate for some years now.
The poem we have got is titled “Gothic and Spring” (“Gotyk i Wiosna”) and is an expression of the fascination for the gothic architecture surrounded by an early spring landscape. That’s the essence and our main direction for shooting the film.
The film was shot during a few very cold, late-winter nights in Wroclaw, Poland, entirely in timelapse technique using Canon DSLR cameras and DitoGear™ OmniSliders.
The score and recitation was composed and performed by Damian Pielka, also known for his cooperation with Lech Janerka as well as his own music projects like Japoto band.
The film has not been qualified for the final competition therefore we decided to share it with the worldwide community.
We put a lot of work and heart to shoot this film and we really appreciate you spreading the word about it.

Credits:
• Poetry: Tadeusz Różewicz
• Score: Damian Pielka
• Photography, editing and grading: Agnieszka Gonczarek & Patryk Kizny

A few days ago we headed for a short trip to test out a first prototype of the DitoGear PortaSlider which is a new, modular timelapse slider dedicated to entry-level an professional timelapse shooters.
We wanted to check how the concepts worked and gave a hard-testing run to the new product. With a total of 14 one-meter track units and 2 trolley designs to test out we had a lot of fun!
The track joints seem to work flawlessly and really precisely even on such long track. The trolley need some refinements and this week we’re going to test out a new, improved design.

Preparing for shots with a 14 meter track takes some time, but it is definitely worth effort giving a whole bunch of new creative options for shooting.

Now about the slider at a glance:
• continuous and and drive-shoot-drive mode, 2 way w/ shutter control
• modular track design (0.5m, 1.0m, 2.0m modules)
• controller and user interface integrated with motor and trolley
• very basic video mode w/optional controller (left, right, speed adjustment)
• horizontal & diagonal operation w/ lightweight cameras
• option of connecting the OmniSlider controller for a full-blown set of features

If you are not in the business, or even if you are, you might not be aware of the amount of work behind TheChapel.
Although we did not shoot the real “making of” shots almost at all, we decided to tell a bit more about making of this film. Illustrated with some photos, shots and post-production screenflows we hope to put some more light on the process of making of The Chapel and give you an overview of what and how we did.

Please leave comments.
Please share it – we would love that the film be watched widely. Although it was posted a few months ago it passed a bit unnoticed. Well, a film needs a bit of luck to be watched.
