Making of TheChapel

Remember The Chapel? If not, watch it NOW!

If you are not in the business, or even if you are, you might not be aware of the amount of work behind TheChapel.
Although we did not shoot the real “making of” shots almost at all, we decided to tell a bit more about making of this film. Illustrated with some photos, shots and post-production screenflows we hope to put some more light on the process of making of The Chapel and give you an overview of what and how we did.

    Hi Patrick,
    I unfortunately do not understand everything, but it's very interesting to see how you do. Is it easy to move the "omnislider", weighs how such version 1.5m. I would really like to see him work with a camera to be sure I can buy it. This system is designed for cameras and I fear that in a vertical position the motor is not powerful enough for a 3.2kg camera (Canon XHA1)!

    Mehdi, horizontally it takes much much more. Up to 25kg. Vertically - not much more than a few kilos, so a small head with 5D and a lens is the maximum. If your entire rig is 3.2kg and a ball head around 0.8 that might work. But I'd be careful.

    That was a lot of horizontal flaring in the stills. Were they shot with an anamorphic lens or something?

    No, this was an anamorphic flares added in post production to the animated stills. The purpose was to bring some life and motion to static and flat images.

    Thank you for sharing this "Making of" film. The Chapel is an extraordinary example of HDR tone mapping for motion pictures. I think it's going to inspire a lot of great work in the near future.     I predict a camera, using the already available technology to integrate 3 sensors (like the 3ccd system) each one with different exposure values that will allow direct shooting of true HDR in realtime. It will come true! If I had the time and the money I would get to work tomorrow!

    great camera work, for one. there's some really nice textures in that place. i think it's too bad there's no chiaroscuro. i would work on the grading of those HDR's, you don't have to push them into that digital artifact range. if you don't know how to do that, let me know and i'll give you some tips.

    do you timelapse as per normal and then use photomatix pro to assemble the images into HDR versions ? ( which you then apply the one preset to all frames in each particular shot ? )

    Because of the use of HDR and other post work this looks fake - CGI - which isn't a necessarily good thing in my opinion... Amazing chapel though.

    This is amazing, I have always wanted to try a HDR timelapse but could not think of a way to do such a thing. I am not sure my timer can fire a 3 shot burst every interval. Also, how did you compile each HDR picture, did you do each set of exposures by hand, or was there some software that let you batch process them all?

    Looks good. I would also like to see other the entire piece without color grading. There were shots in there that looked really good without it.
    Also, I'm not a DSLR user but I've heard various clip time limits for different cams (5 to 12 minutes). Did you have to hack the camera to allow it to shoot contiuously for hours? Do those cams have fire stores available with large capacities over 64gigs? Tieuel Legacy! Motion

    Patryk, your film is so good but also the chapel itself is so beautiful and seeing that place like a ruin surprises me. But I guess this made a good chance for you to shoot an exciting story of a once-fresh place.
    I always liked the un-realism of hdr and it is a pleasure to see both versions in this bts.
