“NGC 281 is an H II region in the constellation of Cassiopeia and part of the Perseus Spiral Arm. It includes or is near the open cluster IC 1590, the double star HD 5005, and several Bok globules. It is visible in amateur telescopes from dark sky locations. It is sometimes unofficially referred to as the Pacman Nebula owing to its fancied resemblance to the eponymous hero of the arcade game Pac-Man.” [wikipedia.org]

    Hi Simon,

Thank you for leaving a word here. You’re first.
As for the annotations – I use a simple software AFA 2.0 by a polish astronomer Piotr Brych. This works with any ‘standard’ image format which is good, but unfortunately can’t read coordinates from FITS file. What you need to do is download the software, install it, point to GSC or other catalogues and load your pic. Then you identify 2 objects from the catalogue on the picture and point them with your mouse. The software does the rest. With USNO2.0 id goes down even to 20 or 22mag! My pictures was also additionally processed in Photoshop after annotating to improve readability.

You can find the software at http://astronomia.brych.com.pl/
I am not sure if Piotr released english version, but that’s pretty simple to use.
Please do not hesitate to contact Piotr in case of questions/issues – I am sure he would be of help.

    Cheers!
    Patryk

    Kind regards
